Pat Barron's life story is intricately connected with one of the most fascinating parts of Aviation History. "At the Going Down of the Sun" is also the story of a boy's dream come true.Pat was born on the 12th March 1917 in Swansea, Wales, UK. His mother died only two years later, leaving her husband James with two young children, Nora, 4, and Pat, 2. James had been severely injured in Flanders in 1918 and was in no condition to care for two small children, so they were sent to their grandparents in rural West Waterford,Ireland, where they later attended the local school in Ballinameela.At age 5, Pat was given the encyclopedia set "Book of Knowledge" by his uncle Jack Barron. It was like magic for a small boy and sent him on an exciting path of discovery. It was the growing field of Aviation that intrigued and fascinated him the most. At the same time he devoured all the stories he could find on the exploits of the WWI aces such as Bishop, Mannock, von Richthofen (the Red Baron), Ball, Collishaw, Pope and many others.Fate had it that in September of 1933 Sir Alan Cobham's "Aerial Circus" came to Dungarvan. After that Pat was hooked.

After the war he resigned his commission in the RAF and flew for various companies to all Continents.He has many adventurous stories to tell, like transporting dead bodies from the Congo to Ireland, flying UN dignitaries to their destinations or dancing with Polynesian girls in order to not annoy the chief. All the while his "Irish Leprechaun" and his big loving family helped him through many testing times.
